Hydro Jetting vs. Drain Snaking: Which Does Your Drain Need?

Compare hydro jetting and drain snaking — how each works, when each makes sense, and why a camera inspection helps you choose.

Drain snaking

A snake (drain auger) is a flexible cable that breaks up or pulls out a blockage. It's a good fit for a single localized clog, like hair in a shower drain.

Hydro jetting

Hydro jetting sends high-pressure water through a specialized nozzle to flush grease, sludge, scale and debris off the pipe walls. It cleans the full diameter of the line rather than just punching a hole through a clog.

How to choose

For a one-time clog, snaking is often enough. For recurring backups, grease-heavy kitchen lines or buildup along the main sewer line, hydro jetting is usually the better option. A sewer camera inspection shows the condition of the line first, so the choice is based on what's actually there.
